Our History

Viking State Bank & Trust was established in February of 1996. The bank began with a downtown location on Water Street with $2,000,000 of bank capital.

As a brand new chartered bank, Viking State Bank & Trust began with zero deposits and zero loans on the first day of operation on February 20, 1996. The bank grew quickly with Rick Burras and Rhonda Schnitzler as original employees of the bank.

In the fall of 2003, the bank expanded with a second location on Old Stage Road in Decorah. This branch offers full service with loan officers on staff as well as teller and new account services.

In 2012, Viking State Bank & Trust and Waukon State Bank merged into one chartered bank. Viking State Bank & Trust operates as a Division of Waukon State Bank.

By 2019, the bank had outgrown the downtown facility and needed more space to serve customers. A new bank building is now being constructed on the original bank site in downtown Decorah. The Officers and Staff of the bank are very excited to see this project unfold and are looking forward to serving customers from the new facility.  An open house is scheduled for Friday, May 17 and Saturday May 18 at the new downtown building.  The next phase of the bank construction will be to replace the drive-up section of the building.  The drive-up section of the main bank is now closed.  Customers will continue to have access to your safe deposit boxes throughout the construction of the new drive-up section of the building.

Viking State Bank & Trust sincerely appreciates our customers who have made this story possible. Our goal is always to serve customers with the respect and exceptional personal service that they deserve.
